Housebreaking your Yorkie
The most important thing to remember about housebreaking any dog is, the more mistakes your dog has the harder it will be on both of you to successfully housebreak your dog. So seek advice as soon as you start having problems. The longer you wait the more time it will take to undo your dogs way of thinking. Yes, there is a point of no return which is why allot of dogs who have not been housebroken are sent to shelter where their demise is almost a certainty. I have had many inquires during the last 8 years about the best way to housebreak your Yorkies. In that same time I created an indoor housebreaking system for MISTIBLEU yorkie puppies to use. MISTIBLEU puppies are trained to eliminate indoors from the time they are weaned till they go to there new homes. Their small size and an abundance of hawks in the area prohibits us from letting the puppies outside. Our city clients also prefer that their yorkie puppies have some training using the litter box so they do not have to go outside to eliminate.
Our MISTIBLEU adult Yorkies use a doggie door to get outside, but when it rains there are some that will not not go out so they use the litter boxes in times of bad weather.
Yorkshire terrier puppies that have been purchased from MISTIBLEU Yorkie's have already begun their training and will adapt more readily to this housebreaking system, because all MISTIBLEU Yorkie's are raised using this system. Because our Yorkshire Terrier puppies are on the smaller size and we do not place them till they are at least 16 weeks and older, they have been using the system longer which is why they progress faster.
Puppies that are not purchased from MISTIBLEU yorkies but were trained to go on paper do very well with the method. If you are persistent, calm tempered and provide the guidance your dog needs so that it understands what you want it to do you should be successful.
As my trainer has said to me many times it is not the dog who is making the mistake. It's you the owner who is not setting your dog up for success.
